If you answered 'yes' to these questions, you would probably make a pretty good counselor. You probably already knew that, however, because you're constantly listening to your heart. If you truly want to become a counselor, you're going to have to choose a specific practice at some point. There are school counselors, marriage counselors, religious counselors, and counselors for many different types of addictions and other mental problems. One way to determine what type of practice would be the best fit for you is to earn a counseling degree. A counseling degree program will expose you to the many different types of counseling jobs out there, and will teach you basic counseling techniques that can be applied to any counseling practice. Qualified counselors typically earn an undergraduate degree in any number of majors, but the most common are either sociology or psychology. They typically go on to earn a masters degree in counseling. To earn this level of counseling degree, most students have to spend a number of hours counseling others under the watch of their advisors. These guided counseling sessions prepare students for real counseling jobs after they graduate.
